A guest reaches the end of a punishing travel day, taps her key card, and walks into a room that already has an occupant. The hotel's answer is a shrug: the same room was given to both of them, and nothing else is open. She is tired and irritated, so she makes the best of it. That leaves two strangers in one hotel room, one of them talkative and the other silent. The story is about what that arrangement does to the mood once the irritation wears thin.
